Our History
The Hermann Garden Club was founded in 1937 and will celebrate our 90th Year in 2027. In that time we have sponsored many civic beautification projects including the Hermannplatz, the garden welcoming visitors to Hermann. And we have given many scholarships to Hermann students interested in horticulture.
Scholarships
We award scholarships annually to qualifying individuals planning to study horticulture. In 2026, we awarded 4 scholarships.
HHS Horticulture Students
The Garden Club encourages students in the Horticulture Department at Hermann High School and provides some financial help for their greenhouse plantings and community garden designs. We also help with their Annuals and Hanging Baskets Plant Sale before Mother's Day. In turn, they help with mulching our public gardens.
Community Gardens
The Garden Club maintains several community gardens, including the Lewis and Clark Riverfront Walk, the George Johnson Park, the train station garden, and the Hermannplatz Garden at the north City Entrance.
The Hermannplatz
This Hermann entrance garden was funded by the Garden Club, other community organizations, and benefactors. Maintenance is paid for by the Hermann Garden Club. This lovely garden is on Market Street behind the old Firehouse. To reach the Hermannplatz, park near the old Firehouse and follow the sidewalk behind the Firehouse around the side of the building to the garden with the bronze statue of the German hero Hermann (Arminius) in its center. The bronze plaque nearby tells about the hero.
The Garden Club has also recently installed an irrigation system and improved the original plantings.This beautiful garden has year-round color. Plantings include Deciduous Holly, Itea “Sweetspire”, Crape Myrtle, Drift Roses, Annual Coreopsis, Prairie Dropseed Grass, Dwarf ‘Hamelen’ Grass, and "Limelight" and "Annabelle" Hydrangea.
The Tree Commission and the Tree Project
In 2001, the Club sponsored the formation of a Hermann Tree Commission to protect and maintain appropriate existing trees and to replace trees or recommend new ones where indicated.
In recognition of the Tree Commission’s efforts, in 2004 Hermann was awarded a Tree City USA designation.
In 2018 the Missouri Conservation Department alerted the Commission to the availability of a grant-funded consultation with landscape architect Tim Frevert, under the auspices of the Conservation Department. The Commission applied for and obtained the grant.
The tree map generated for the Lower City Park contains 80 trees of varieties acclimated to flood plain conditions. They offer aesthetic value, as well as support for wildlife. Trees are supplied and planted by Pea Ridge Tree Farm, which has generously offered a price that is below market value. The optimum size is 2” in diameter at planting. This map is available at the City Office for those who would like to see it.
In support of the tree planting project, the Garden Club organized a campaign to offer residents the opportunity to sponsor a memorial tree, and also obtained a grant from the Community Fund of the Hermann Area.
Window Boxes at the German School for the Holidays
The Garden Club also decorates the window boxes and urns at the German School. We often use dried and sprayed hydrangeas from the Hermannplatz along with greenery provided by Pea Ridge Tree Farm.
